ANNOUNCEMENT

Research Assistant Position

Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy is seeking a creative and motivated research assitant for a cutting-edge research project funded through the European Regional Development Fund and State Budget.

The successful candidate will be working with Dr. Vlad Constantin Manea and Dr. Lucian Besutiu at the Solid Earth Dynamics Department in the Institute of Geodynamics as part of "Cyberinfrastructure for Geodynamic Studies Related to the Vrancea Seismogenic Zone" project. The candidate will be involved actively in the construction, implementation and use of the state-of-the-art computational infrastructure that will be implemented through this project. He/she will participate at the maintenance of the HPCC/HPVC/GeoWall system. The candidate is expected to participate in the aquisition of new geophysical field data necessary to validate the numerical modeling build with the help of the new infrastructure.

The goal of the project is to explore the origin of Vrancea seismogenic zone using a series of 3D high-resolution geodynamic models. The modeling strategy will involve developing a work-flow based on GPlates and a suite of geodynamics simulations based on CitcomS and I2ELVIS to test alternative geodynamic scenarios. A set of plate reconstruction models will be employed as starting conditions for dynamic convection models. The successful applicants will run and visualize 3D fluid-dynamic models on the newly created cyber-infrastructure.

     Requirements for this position are:

    (1) background in geophysics/geology (a Master degree is desirable, but not a must),

    (2) background IT (Windows, Microsoft Office, Surfer, Didger, etc.),

    (3) disponibility to perform field work,

    (4) good English knowledge,

    (5) the ability to work within a team including graduate students and senior academic staff

Desirable attributes include experience in computational programming (Fortran, C, Phyton) and knowledge of the Linux/Unix operational systems.

This position is funded for a maximum term of 3 years.

The application should contain a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests. More information can be found by visiting: http://cyberdyn.geodin.ro/

     Closing Date: 29th October 2010

     Requirements for the position are:

(1) A PhD in geodynamics/seismology/physics/mathematics or similar field,

(2) Expertise in computational/analytical modeling, and

(3) The ability to work within a team including graduate students and senior academic staff.

Desirable attributes include a strong computational background, with experience in numerical modeling of geodynamic systems; extensive experience with computational programming and database administration (C, Python, php, mySQL etc).

The position is full-time for up to 3 years.

The application should contain a cover letter, a curriculum vitae including a publication list and a statement of research interests.      More information can be found by visiting: http://cyberdyn.geodin.ro/
