CYBERDYN
Cyberinfrastructure for Geodynamic Studies Related to the Vrancea Seismogenic Zone
MAIN GOAL
The main purpose of this interdisciplinary research project is to build a state of-the-art cyberinfrastructure within the Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy of Sciences - Bucharest, Romania, in order to study the long-term
geodynamic evolution of the Vrancea active seismic zone. It will be composed by a HPCC (High-performance computing cluster), HPVC (High-performance visualization cluster) and 3D Stereo Visualization System (GeoWall).
A cyberinfrastructure is essential to the success of research in the field of computational geodynamics. So far there is no such technical facility in any of the Romanian institutions involved in the Earth Sciences, on the overall, and Geodynamics in particular. This project will bring, for the first time in Romania, a modern cyberinfrastructure dedicated to geodynamic studies. This will have a multiple impact:
-bringing the IGAR research infrastructure at a world-class level which will allow the institution to enlarge its research field, addressing the most intricate problems in geodynamics by using modern approaches (modeling of the thermo-dynamic processes into the upper mantle) and to date computing technology
-increasing the IGAR national and international visibility due to its to date research facilities
-allowing participation of IGAR in various national and international projects, where high computational facilities are required
-achieving a pool of high expertise specialists in computational geodynamics by training young computing professionals and scientists oriented toward earth sciences.
-finally, support of such state-of-the-art research is expected to contribute to many of the scientific achievements related with the Vrancea seismogenic area.
The origin and cause of intermediate-depth seismicity beneath Vrancea has been challenging the scientists for some time. Various independent research groups have proposed several geodynamical models. In this project we propose to study in a
consistent approach several geodynamic hypothesis with the help of a cyberinfrastructure.
