CYBERDYN
Cyberinfrastructure for Geodynamic Studies Related to the Vrancea Seismogenic Zone
ACTIVITIES
The main activities for this project will take place in 3 main stages.
|
STAGE I
The first project stage is scheduled mainly for the first year and consists of the
following main activities related with cyberinfrastructure set-up:
-Preparation of the HPCC/HPVC rooms (tilled floor, cabling, 60kVA UPS,
dual 4 ton AC and monitoring system installation).
-Rack installation
-Master node installation and set-up (this is where the operating system
(CentOS) is installed together with all necessary libraries and parallel
codes).
-Switches installation and setup
-Login node installation and setup (this machine is where normal users
login and have their home directories located)
-File server installation and setup (this machine is where all data coming
from 3D modelling is safely stored (RAID 5)).
-Compute nodes installation and setup
-KVM system installation
-Cabling the whole HPCC (power, network and KVM cables)
-CentOS installation and customization on the master node and compute
nodes
-Benchmark the whole system for computing capacity and stability. We
plan to install Linpack package and associated libraries in order to perform
a benchmark commonly used in HPCC systems (see www.top500.org ).
-Parallel codes installation and benchmark
-Running preliminary models
-Installation and setup of the 3D Stereo Visualization system (GeoWall)
Coeval to lab activities dedicated to the structuring of the HPCC, several field
campaigns will be conducted in order to collect additional geophysical and geodesy
data providing information for computer modelling of the lithosphere structure and
monitoring of the lithosphere dynamics within Vrancea zone.
Also in this phase we plan to offer training for scientists in order to know how to
use the HPCC. At this phase we need to employ a system administrator with
excellent network administration and programming skills. His primary job is to
maintain, debug and upgrade the HPCC system during this three-year project.
In the first year we plan to offer at least one PhD position in the field of
computational geodynamics. The main research topic will be related with 3D
numerical modelling of geodynamic processes associated with the Vrancea
seismogenic zone.
A web portal with our progress will be made available for the general public.
Here we will present details about the main goals of this research project, benchmark
results, preliminary modelling results, etc.
